For stock options in the future, look into sparkling gouramis :) they're better suited for a 10 gallon instead of honey gourami (who are social and do better 20g+)

Ember tetras would be another good choice, or perhaps one of the other smaller schoolers if you can find them like chili rasboras or the like.

Theyd do well in a 10g and with pygmy cories

But check your GH too, as what water you have can make a difference in what is best and what won't be so good longterm too.

@itiwhetu oh, given where you are at, is there seasonal differences down there? Like temperature wise. Kinda curious and off topic though
I'll post under White cloud fry thread ;)

Thanks! I have decided against honey gourami. I’m really interested in them but they’ll just have to wait for when I can have a bigger tank. Pretty much scrapped my whole stocking plan. I really enjoy having a fish with big personality so I was thinking of going back to bettas. I was trying to branch out from bettas to other fish but it seems like I need to choose between a school and a solo.

I’m thinking about getting some cherry shrimp just so I can try something new (and my tank is heavily planted so I think they’ll be able to hide well if needed) and getting a “peaceful” female betta. Or tracking down some sparkling gourami. Are either of these ideas flawed? My water is 78F, ph is usually 7.6, I have sand substrate, a big sponge filter, and hornwort, anubias, java fern, and amazon sword. Could I try pygmy corys with either a female betta or sparkling gourami?

In the 10g you could do 2 sparkling gouramis AND a nano schooler... ;)

For example for stock:

2 sparkling gouramis
8-10 microrasboras or ember tetras
10 corydoras pygmaeus

However if you go sparkling gouramis cant do shrimp as they are not shrimp friendly

There are some peaceful betta options that aren't the domestic betta (very not recommended to do a community with a betta splendens).

Look into betta imbellis!

But if you go domestic betta, id skip any other fish with the betta. You may get lucky and be able to keep shrimp though, but thats hit or miss with bettas.

Thank you for those suggestions!
