Which substrate is best? I’m thinking of getting some sort cichlids, I kinda know they like to ‘dig’ the floor, so is it best to get sand or gravel? Any recommendation on which type? Think convicts or some thing like that?

If you are getting fish which like to dig, they will prefer sand to gravel.

Be careful which type of sand you buy. If you are keeping south-american cichlids, they like acidic water, so you would want an inert sand. If you are keeping african cichlids, they generally prefer alkaline water so you would want coral sand or something similar.
