I'm thinking about getting some plants for my 64 litre tank. Only thing is I don't know which ones would be best for my tank size etc. I only have 6 platies in there right now

Vallis, java fern and Anubias? All except the vallis here will need their roots above water.

Most attach these to a piece of bogwood with either fish line or cotton.

These are all easy growers :)

I recently bought Hygrophila rosae australis for the first time and wish someone would have told me about it sooner... love it for a background/middle plant (I'm going for an overgrown wild look).  It has nice veiny looking leaves and the new growth is coming with the nice reddish color.

Thanks so much :) I'll have a look at my LFS and see if they have any of these available

My tank is 64 litre, same as yours, with 7 platies plus a lot of fry!
I've been trying different plants for the last 2 months and this is where I'm currently at (well, this was last week, I added another new plant today :)).  All my plants are easy care and don't need high light or CO2.

It's mostly a mix of different species of moss, anubias, java fern and cryptocorynes.  Today I added some hygrophila polysperma at the back which is meant to be undemanding and I'm hoping it will grow nice and tall.

I shopped online at Aquaessentials to buy some of the plants.  In particular the java ferns are two species (trident and microsorum mini) which I could only get online, I wanted to get these as they are smaller and I felt they suited our tank size better.

I did try vallis and egeria densa but they didn't like my tank for some reason.  You can either grow vallis or you can't but it's worth a shot :)

Your tank looks great. I love it. I've just added some plants to mine a few minutes ago. I've got a picture up in another thread :)
I didn't know about the aqua essentials website. I'll have a look when I get some more plants. Thanks a lot!

It depends, what type of lighting, do you dose with ferts and co2? Is your substrate gravel or sand?

I have those same anubias (both) as in that picture and I love them.  My anubias nana are so happy that they have flowered 4 times.  Love moss balls too.

I'd disagree with vallis, to be honest, I had some in a 65l tank, and it just grew too tall, needed trimming every couple of weeks.

Since the OP doesn't have any plants at the moment, chances are she doesn't dose any ferts or CO2. I could be wrong......

Sarah, my big fave plants at the moment are cryptocorynes. Pretty easy to grow, and with the right types, don't grow massive. A c.wendtii would do nicely, as would c. willisii  and c.becketii.

If I bought some Java fern on bogwood, do I still need to soak it before going into my tank?

Probably not.

You might get a bit of tannin coming out, but it shouldn't be too much.
