looks like it maxed out on the low range so use the high one.

The left tube is very blue, suggesting that the low pH test kit is running outside its intended values of 6-7.6, so I'd say you need to use a high pH test kit (like myself) and many others on the south coast.

However, the high pH colour looks pretty vague! Did you give all the bottles a good bang and shake before adding drops to the test tube? Any chance that you have not added enough drops according to the instructions? Its been ages since I used my pH kits, but I recall that the low and high kits needed a different number of drops (something like 1 drop in it).

7.4 for the 2nd tank

would probably do a 50% water change in both and test again.

these tests are just after a 50% water change. the second one is pretty normal result but the first isnt. i best go research why. thanks for help

I wouldn't just yet. What kind of tank is it and what's in it? I would test again. You might have gotten a contaminated sample.

its a 50L, has 5 albino corys and 4 glowlight tetra. i think maybe because i used paving sand in this one its caused this high ph, could that be right? its a lovely colour and super soft i thought it would be good for the corys... it already has two bits of bogwood and is planted. i have no idea if its a huge problem, should i just do daily water changes would it reduce in time? its going to be at least two months before their new 90L home is ready.

I'm a noob with this stuff but years back i did have some rock in my tank that
raised the pH from around 6.8 to 7.6, the rock has been removed for years and the tank still sits at 7.6.

My guess is you'd have to remove whatever is causing the pH to raise and do a 100% water change?
But like i said, i'm a noob and just taking a rough guess.

Sarah, if it were me I would do regular changes for a week or so and test again and see if it budges at all. It may come down over time as whatever soluble mineral in the sand is diluted. It is rather high though. Do the fish look troubled by it at all?

It was 'tufa rock' i removed it about a year and half ago and the pH is still as high.
There's nothing else in there that would cause my pH to remain so high
as the same sand and slate is in my 20g and that pH is 6.8, that's why i thought you'd have to do a 100% water change.
