i use Seachem Prime when performing my water changes. Prime claims to detoxify ammonia and nitrite and convert it to a less harmful substance that is still able to be broken down by the filter. Aswell as removing chlorine. What im wondering is should i be using a product that claims to do so much in my fish in cycle. In other words should i use a product that just removes chlorine, and leave the ammonia removal to my water changes, or does it not matter either way.

Just thinking will Prime prolong the cycle process??

na, its fine, its more important to do water changes and keep the fish alive than really worry about the water itself, it will cycle in time, it just takes as long as it takes.

Yeah i've asked this.

Ammonia is coverted to a non-toxic form but is still picked up as ammonia on your API test and the bacteria still feed on it.

Yes it will prolong the process, but then you'll also have fish that aren't dead. Which is often viewed as a good thing! ;)

However, Prime isn't a substitute for water changes, the conversion of the ammonia into ammonium only lasts a few days, then it's back to the highly toxic stuff.

EDIT: Linking this thread to your other thread about frequency of water changes, when you see ammonia and/or nitrite, you should be doing a water change, adding Prime to the new water, not just adding Prime as a detoxifier.

Agreed. Prime will convert ammonia into ammonium, which is less toxic to fish but still usable by the bacteria you're trying to grow, so it's a good thing.

Prime does NOT extend the cycle. The ammonia is still available to be used by the bacteria.

Where does this idea that the cycle is prolonged because of using Prime comes from?

I believe the main reason that Prime does detoxify ammonia is because of the chloramines in the tap water. The ultimate issue is that water changes, in that case, require some time for the bacteria to process the ammonia that goes into the tank, even in a mature situation. Prime just keeps the fish safe during that time.
