Which Fish To Add?

Hello All,

I have a Juwel Trigon 190 litres tank which currently houses:

1 x dwarf gourami
1 x red tail shark
2 x large angelfish
13 x penguin fish
4 dwarf borelli cichlids

I was wondering what else I might add to this?

I used to have clown loaches but they were prone to white spot disease and they died Ideally I would like something to clean up at the bottom a bit, though not the biggest fan of plec's and wouldnt want one too large (but also I try to get live plants) The fish I have considered to add are the following:

Rainbow fish
another red tail (might need to get a few more caves but what are peoples opinions on this?)
Tiger barbs (problematic with the angels?)

Another shoaling fish would be nice with some colour to them, and maybe 1 or 2 more characters....

HI sounds like a nice tank as it is, I wouldnt add any more character fish to that though as you might run into territory problems. For the bottom if you have sand how about some cories or dwarf chain loaches and for an other school some dwarf neon rainbows?

Dependent on tank size but there shouldnt be any problems with that mix. Ideally you want a 4 foot tank but some people get away with the sharks in 3 foot tanks but I wouldnt advise it.


One more thing for Hexy, dont add an other red tailed shark as they will fight to the death.

I do like the dwarf neon rainbows - how many would you get of these?
Unfortunately I have gravel (sand got too hard to clean my tank as I live in an apartment)... any more ideas on the bottom fish?
Are Tiger Barbs a bad call with angelfish?

Thanks, I'm just checking in case I have to rehome my bully Platy. My friend's son has a 5 ft tank but he has a red shark and I wasn't sure about them.

I would get 8 of the Dwarf Neon Rainbows and yes Tiger Barbs are pretty problematic with angels most of the time and the best way to deal with TB aggression is to max out their numbers which you dont have the room for in the tank after the dwarf neons and some kind of bottom dweller you would be at max stock IMO. As for other bottom dwellers with gravel, I would go for some kind of small plec but obvs not commons or gibbis something like bulldog plecs or maybe a bristlenose alternativley you could try and find a nice colourful L number plec for your tank.

I like the look of the bulldog and L plecs. Which of the L numbered plecs would be relatively cheap to purchase, i.e. under £10/$15?

Prices on plecs vary all over the world some start around £10 whilst for some you will pay hundreds. Best to see what your LFS can get at what prices make sure to write down the number and find out what size it gets I would stick to 4-5 inch plec max.

How much would a dwarf neon rainbow fish typically cost? My LFS has them at £5.50 each which seemed a little steep... Also I have looked for the Bulldog pleco but no luck. My store had a Chubby pleco... do you have any info on these?

£5-50 each would be a reasonable price for juveniles, with the male starting to develope their hump-back look and red finnage, so you could ensure that you are going to get twice or three times the number of females per male. If they are younsters (~<1") then that is a steep price. I've seen youngsters in several local fish stores on offers for the like of "6 for £10."
