Hi

I have noticed my cora dory have laid there first set of eggs so i have gone and got myself a boyu fish hatchery FH-101 as I have a boyu 86 half moon tank.

Before I put the hatchery in my tank where should i position it. should i use the free floating option it has or should i attach it to the fish tank wall? If attach it to the fish tank wall how high on the wall should I attach it?

Thanking you in advance

Russ

Newly hatched cory fry can get through the slits on those breeding traps, an old pair of tights stretched tightly round it will stop them escaping into the main tank.

thanks for the reply and info :)

which breeding traps would be better for cory doras? I have a half moon tank if it makes any difference

Almost all breeding traps are going to be square/ box shaped. You could get a net type of breeding/ fry trap and because the frame that the mesh stretches over is plastic you might be able to warm the plastic frame and gently bend it into the curve that suits your tank.
I have these kinds of mesh net trap and because my tanks dont have lids I usually attach the net to the side of the tank using a bulldog clip as close as possible to the filter return so that their is water movement through the net. This helps stop eggs developing fungus and stops the water going foul in the trap. I Often add some weed such as java moss to the net too, becuase it often holds micro foods that newly hatched fry can feed off.

My peppered corys, which I've had for over two years now, laid their first eggs after a water change last weekend.  I hadn't expected or intended it, but I guess I used slightly cooler water at the same time the female was ready.  I wasn't prepared at all, so let nature take its course to find out what would happen.  Unsurprisingly, over three days the eggs had all but disappeared, I assume to hungry mouths.  So next time I will be prepared and have bought a mesh and frame type hatching/fry enclosure which I will attach to the back of my tank with suckers next to the internal filter outlet, and attempt to move the eggs from the glass to the net.  Hoping for another egg laying attempt at next water change this weekend!

ty for the info :-s

would you have the make and model of "bought a mesh and frame type hatching/fry enclosure"?

I found new cory fry tended to get stuck between the frame & the net of those mesh traps.
I just use new unused food storage tubs & do small daily water changes with water from the tank to hatch cory eggs

To encorage the spawning, for a week prior to doing your next water change using cooler water, I would give the corys some extra live foods or frozen live foods like bloodworms and mosquito wrigglers. This will help get the females in peak condition for breeding. You can also encourage spawning by doing a water change (again with cooler than current tank water) just before a weather change, usually a low with a rain event coming.

yes this does happen and i find that corie babies do better in a tank of there own and prefrably the one that they are layed in as they eat the egg that is left over ( so u are removing the adults in stead of the babies) also they must have a air driven filter and should be fed live brine shrimp(babies)

Is a cooler water change potentially damaging to other fish?  We always try to temperature match water to avoid shock to the fish.  I'm especially worried about my ram, which prefers warmer water anyway.  And maybe the delicate amano shrimp, cardinal tetras, etc?  My tank is usually kept at a steady 26C.  How much cooler should the cool water change be?  About 23C?
