Besides PetSmart or Country Max, and all those other normal pet stores, where can I get a descent betta fish, but nothing that'll cost more than $15? I know you can order online, but those usually cost at least $60. Any suggestions?

A friend/family member, a pet store, a more local breeder probably still expensive and then Thailand Imports which are expensive. The cheapest is at a petstsore or if a friend or family member gives/buys you one.

I have some fish for sale that are thailand imports. Are you in the US? I have 3 crowntail pairs that are $10 for the pair, the fish are $5 each, and shipping is $15. Thought you might be interested :D

You have to do some serious researching on stores in your area. I highly recommend checking out your local smaller stores, they are often cleaner and not on a central filtration system (big no-no if they're in tanks).
There's a pinned thread in the Tropical Fish Forum where people can post stores they've had good experiences at. You might look there.

I went to a local fish store to get my HM betta and they only charged 7.99, AND the person who breeds bettas actually works there in the store. I also made a lot of use of www.dexonline.com to find the number of local stores and grill them on their tank filtration, PH, prices and types. It's also a good way to determine just how knowledgeable their staff is.
You'll also want to bone up on diseases to keep an eye out for so you don't get a sick fish (unless you're properly prepared for that). Here's another good link: http://www.bettatalk.com/betta_diseases.htm

Hope you find a really great place to get your Betta!

Are the bettas you're looking to buy the ones that you want to breed? If so you'll want to buy a pair from a breeder and not just any old fish from a pet store

where are you from cause ik the country max by me usually has nothing special but twice now iv managed to get plakat males from them, and every so often afew nice females come through. aside from the lfs and lps online is sounding like your best bet, but you will probably spend more than you are looking to.

if you're really concerned about the quality (from an age, health, genetics standpoint), on aquabid.com you can generally find nice pet quality fish for 5-10 dollars with another 5-10 dollars for shipping. 10-20 dollars for a good quality fish.

it's like the difference between getting a puppy from a respectable breeder, and going to the pet store in the mall that sells puppymill dogs. You'd love either puppy just the same, and you're spending a little more, but better to support the person working to improve the breed than to support the person destroying the breed for money.

im not sure if ur in the UK but if they have petcos they actually have so pretty good quality bettas for around $7. i got a yellow and black CT from there a long time aog.. nice fish
