Where To Buy Ammonia (Uk) & Tank Temperature Question

It's been available online this week as I ordered some on Monday & picked it up from my local Boots chemist (50 yards from where I work) on Thursday.

So any fluff about it not being available for a while is just pure... fluff :D

Luke i have just found this on ebay, i would contact seller first so he can let you know the ingredients.

Keith.

Hi Guys

As some of you will know I have had trouble trying to get hold of ammonia.

I have been to both boots and homebase today, homebase have stopped the ammonia they sell in nearly all their stores. Boots today said it will no longer be available as far as they know, it is also showing out of stock online.

So does anyone know anywhere else to try, and can it be shipped? I have heard it can't really be ordered online as it has to go via a special post/courier service.

My second question is simple I guess, my tank's heater is set to 30 degree's, yet the external thermometer is stuck at 26. It's been on for 48 hours now and hasn't moved. Do you think it's just because it's external, measuring the tank's glass heat instead?

Thanks :)

Where do you live Luke, I could let you have some of mine.

Hi, I live on Wirral, just under liverpool (Bromborough to be precise)

Well yes it would normally be fine, apart from the fact it's out of stock online so can't order it at the moment.

I was referring to this:

but they said it hasn't been available online either for a while

Have another look in Homebase! My local one said they didn't sell it and when I went to the cleaning product aisle I found it on the shelf! Its in a white bottle with a blue screw top called "Household Ammonia".

Just called Homebase Wrexham and they said it was in stock so I have the joy of driving there after work tonight, probably only to find it's got fragrances in or something stupid :(

I get mine from ebay (Kleen-Off).

Nice. Is that 9.5% solution & is it plain, not perfumed? It doesnt say on the item description.

Thta's the one I got from my diy shop. It doesn't say on the bottle, but the website says it's pure. I also emailed the company to check the % and they said

"Our Kleenoff Ammonia is 9.5% Ammonia & the rest is water."

Kleen-Off has been one of the ones that's worked just fine many times in the past. The only hitch is that I have a memory that maybe they have several different types in their model line, some with the usual color, fragrance, surfactant problems - so you have to be sure and get their plain one.

Yes it is just ammonia solution. No perfume or additives. It was recommended to me on another forum. I use 5ml in my 100 liter tank to get 5ppm.

Eg: http://www.tropicalfish.site5.com/tfc/showthread.php?t=6146

It is made by Jeyes and their spec sheet says it just contains ammonia:

You can also get this from Robert Dyas hardware stores if that helps.

Hi I live not far away in Manchester and bought some in the large Boots here last month.
Also I was at the Trafford Centre last weekend and noticed they had some in stock there there too.

Hope that helps!

My local Boots said they no longer stocked it. None of the pharmacies in my town had any either. Something to do with anti-terror legislation.
