Where Should I Position My 'wavemaker'?

Its very similar to a koralia.
Cut the end off an old sock/pair of tights and pull it over it so the hole is at the front, it'll massively reduce the flow coming out. It also clears the water a little.
It doesn't look great but it'll do the job!

but by reducing the intake rate isn't that placing undue strain on the motor as it will be working harder to pull the water in through the tights/socks?

Possibly, but only as much as if there were some debris on there.
I know people who have had their koralias with a sock over it for years and no problems.

Also id say its only the same as putting media in your filter. The media reduces the flow. Although that is designed for that purpose.

That shouldn't be as powerful but the flow will be very uniform.
