Where do i get ammonia from

ammonia can be found at a supermarket.. just look in the cleaning aisle.. if you find it.. make sure its clear, give it a shake and see if it foams up.. if it does foam up its no good

Independent hardware/houshold stores are best for non-soapy cleaning ammonia. As I've said countless times on threads like this don't bother travelling around chainstores and don't bother using the internet. What you need is a Yellow Pages and a phone. As simple as that. Make some calls to smaller shops and ask. Why people get frustrated when the big shops and web cannot provide something is beyond me!

I used AmoKleen household ammonia 9.5% solution by Barrettine which I brought at my local hardware shop for about £1.

Well thats it, i give up ive looked and looked at all the supermarkets and asked at the chemists and NO-ONE sell ammonia . Im at a loss at what to do next, ive been adding fish food to the new tank and letting it rott, i done a reading today and ammonia is about 0.10 and nitrite is 0.20, have i started some sort of cycling?, i also added 'cycle' on sunday when i got the tank and wil add it again on sunday. Will my tank cycle with what i am doing?

Thankyou slyspy for the advice, ive looked at the yellow pages and made a list of hardware stores and will be visiting them all tomorrow, now why didnt i think of that before 'doh!'

You can start cycling using fish food, and you seem to have done this, just not as easy to see when you have finished and difficult to know how much food to add. Some or the miracle products on the market that say they cycle immediatly apparently do according to some (well in 24 hours).

I went to my local hardware shop and i got some ammonia!.......at last. I read the label and there was no info into what is in it though, it is called max ammonia, is this the right one?. When i shake it it froths up at the top.

I forgot to say that i have a polyester filter in at the moment, should i change it to the carbon filter for this type of cycling?.

Hi, I'm not an expert but I think if it froths up at all then you can't use it for cycling. I began cycling with fish food but the smell of the rotting food took over my living room, so in the end I advertised on the buy sell and swap part of the forums for any Ammonia that anyone had left over from their cycle and got a bottle for £2 including p&p.

I it froths then I'm afraid it contains soap and is therefore no good. Save your legs (or petrol) and get on the phone - you may have to go further afield.
