hi all,
iv has my tank set up for around 5-6 months and i have not changed just rinsed the blue filter and green nitrate filter once. Do i need to do this every 3 months. I am unsure when to change these 2 filters, some seller on ebay was saying every month but i suppose thats to make them money!! Is it best to only chnage them when they are falling apart? Help much appreciated
thanks.

never.

I still have mine from my filter which I bought nearly 8 years ago. Just rinse them. The only you need to replace is the white floss :good:

Nitrates are removed from the tank when you do your maintenance water change not via the filter.

You should never ever change your filter media, it has a nice colony of beneficial bacteria on it that is busy eating your ammonia & nitrites & in so doing keeping your fish alive. I only rinse my filter media in old tank water when the flow has noticably slowed.

As you stated, it is only wise to change your media when it has physicaly started to disintegrate. Why this would happen I do not know.

thanks for the great advice guys, roughly how often should the nitrate filter be washed in tank water & does the fine blue filter need washed at the same intervals or left alone

i do change the white floss filter regulary

Your filter media only needs rinsing when the water flow reduces indicating its getting blocked with debris. I do mine every couple of months. Just gently swish all your sponges/media round in used tank water you have removed on your water change. Handle it gently so to destroy as little bacteria as possible. The white floss is a polishing pad for removing debris particles from your water to keep it crystal clear - you replace that again if your flow reduces and depending on how stocked your tank is will depend on how often it will need to be done.
