When A Fishes Color Gets Lighter

does that always mean that its stressed or are there many reasons that a fish's color fades?

My fish are fine, I was just wondering because I've only heard that it means they're stressed.

Don't they also go a little pale at night (in complete darkness)?

Yeah, I think neons do. Because mine do when I've had the light out for awhile but then they get their color back when I turn it back on.
