I've noticed that my crowntail betta seems to be turning white on his dorsal fin. It also seems to be spreading as its also affecting the scales right below his "contaminated" dorsal fin. Is this normal? I've had him for over a year. Please help!

Yes, I'm sure he's a crowntail because when I bought him, he looked like this.

Here are some closer shots. My new camera doesn't take clear shots up close of my aquarium fish. Sorry, these are the best I could get.

His fins have appeared stuck together like this for a while now, maybe a few months. I didn't think anything of it until his fins started turning white. If it's fin rot, how should I treat him? I have Splendid BettaFix remedy medication & Applus Anti-Fungus and Fin Rot Treatment medication.

P.S. I googled combtail and crowntail and I really can't tell the difference, how can you be sure?

Yeah I was about to say...it's not a crowntail lol - but someone beat me to it. Hope you find out what's wrong with him soon, I wouldn't know because I'm new to this whole thing. Check out my pictures of my crowntail ^^

It looks like columnaris...I can't tell from the pictures but does the white part look wooly or fuzzy?

 I hope its not that columnaris. If he was mine I would put him in a smaller container with clean water and meds and watch him for a couple of days. When mine had columnaris the turning pale was the last thing they did and that was on the body and not the fins. Lets hope it is just an age thing :good: :good:
keep us posted

Hey guys, I thought I'd update on my bettas progress. Well I've been treating both of my bettas for fin rot because I know sunset has it. He's supposed to be a veiltail betta but his fin looks like its been chopped off.

Courage seems to be doing alright, despite the fact that his fin and scales are white. I've been treating it as fin rot or a fungus, using anti fungul medication. I've put both of them into a small betta condo container. I know its really small but it makes it much easier to administer the medication, do water changes and carefully monitor their progress.

I'm including more shots of courage close up, hoping that maybe someone can correctly identify his condition.

For one, that is a crowntail. He obviously had finrot starting when you got him. And for two, you need to get those two boys out of that duel betta hex tank and into tanks of at least 1-2 gallons, with heaters. Tanks that size need to be cleaned at least twice a day, and that's with one fish in them. Meds alone won't do any good without heat, unless your room (or wherever they are) is 82-84*F. Any good antibacterial medicine will work; I prefer Maracyn-Two and a pinch of salt per gallon. The tanks need to be cleaned a lot more than you have been, as dirty water and ammonia will cause fin rot.

I hope you can get these boys fixed up.

Alright firstly like bettagurl said, he is a crowntail... crowntails are sensitive to water quality, poor water quality will cause their spikes to burn off you could say, high ammonia in water will cause them to lose the spikes which is definatly what happened to your guy. And he definatly has finrot, look at the brown edges. Now as for the white fin/scales, there's a possibility that it could be early stages of colmunaris, but if after treatment (meaning good treatment such a a mix of maracyn 1 & 2) the white is still there, its not fuzzy and doesn't seem to be spreading then there's a chance that he could be marbling out. Some bettas will marble later in life, and a marble betta is constantly changing, even if its very small unnoticable changes. Hope that helped.

jaded is spot on.But would like to also say that ct males tned to go curly on the extented rays. These are the ways you could help your male recover:

ial in water
daily water changes
salt
mela/pima fix
theres probably a couple more but i cant think right now.Lol.

Thanks to everyone who responded! Otherwise, I would have had no idea. I still haven't decided wether or not to put them back into their one gallon tanks, I would like to keep them in the betta condo and change the water every other day between medication treatments. Also, I'm not exactly sure how to put heaters into their tiny one gallon tanks.
