What's The Funniest Thing You Have Heard Said In A Lfs?

Haha. Funny thread! My story isn't that great but went in to a new LFS and want to see if they were trust worthy on their advice. I see a jv emp angel. I say oh what's that fish (I knew and I knew quite a bit about them)
Guy : oh that's a Korian Angel.
Me : what's the lv emp angel then? (pointing to the label on the tank)
Guy : oh yeh, sorry they look identical, it could be either.
Me: oh right, I have a 40 gallon, is that big enough?
Guy : yeh sure, they go in most sized tanks
Me: how big do they grow?
Guy: not much bigger
Me : do they stay that colour
Guy : no they turn red and blue.
Me : I thought I saw a picture and they were yellow and blue stripes.
Guy : no
Me : ok see you later!!!

Worst LFS I've been in! Lol!!

Just goes to show how thick some of the staff are in lfs as well as some of the customers. And those poor fishes are at thier mercy.
Why don't people research!!!!!!
Im suprised These people can actually generate enough brain power to keep their eyes open.

mine was last monday, i went to an LFS that wasnt my usual one and they had loads of gorgs in stock, photosynthetic and non, all in ok shape.
i get approached by an assistant who says that they have just got a shippment in and to talk to the boss as he is the gorg expert :) i think 'hey hey, finally someone to talk gorgs with'

after a few questions by me i discover that the boss knows sweet FA about gorgs.
there are over 64 billion families of gorgs he tells me (umm ok)
most a photosynthetic, usually the really bright ones he says with a smile (#129###?)

when i ask why are they so hard to keep he tells me that it is because they come from deeper water so the salt level is lower!

after pointing to a blueberry and telling me its a simple coral to keep but needs high lighting and also being unable to name any of the corals i decide to educate him and the group of people that have started to listen about proper care and species names.
i didnt buy any gorgs from him and doubt any of the customers in the shop will either.

Well, I was sold a dwarf common pleco once.

"Shouldn't get any bigger than 2 or 3 inches."

Seriously, wouldn't it make a lot more sense for the LFS staff to be knowledgeable? Then they'd actually have some REPEAT customers! Then they could make MORE money!

Duh ...

i got sold a purple tipped acro for £15 as a finger leather once...i was expecting to pay atleast £50 for it

i also got told i could add two female clowns as they could turn back to males...oh dear!

this is what happens when large garden center chains decide to sell marines :p

I don't think it's fair to label store assistants that know little about one species thick, heck we keep more than 100,000 fish at any one time at work, over 1000 species, and I couldn't supply every single piece of information about each one, especially seeing as we keep quite a few species which I'm not familiar with.

Though sometimes members of staff could deal with certain situations better, IE, pointing to them to a member of staff that knows something about that species etc.

I think that's the point 'standingbysetting' if you don't know you'd hope they'd just say, and look it up or as you say point you to someone who does know.

Most good LFS have tons of books to check if they're unsure.

I haven't heard anything funny in a LFS I believe.

I have heard some really stupid things though and cannot hold my tongue once the customer says "ok, I'll have one"

Well what a great thread.

First thing I would say is as with Lewis I always test new fish shops by asking about things I already know about. I have the utmost respect for someone who says "I don't know let me go and find out", in fact just the other day I was looking at some stock and when I asked how big a Rock Beauty will get and the guy said "I'm not sure I will have a look for you" and went and got a well thumbed marine reference book out and found out, which is brilliant have no issues with that at all. If someone lies to me, or just makes something up though I just don't go back or at very least don't speak to that staff member again. I also always have my say if I over hear misdirection in a shop.

My story goes back to Malawi keeping days. I was looking to run a fishless cycle and was looking for ammonia to kick it all off and I went into a fish shop in Sheerness on Sheppey.

Me "Hello mate, do you sell Ammonia by any chance"

LFS owner "What do you want that for"

Me "To kick start a fishless cycle"

Owner "No you don't want to add Ammonia, you need to get it out"

Me "No, I need to mature my filter to process Ammonia before I add fish"

Owner "How much Ammonia is there at the moment"

Me "None its a completely new system"

Owner "If you have no Ammonia you can stick some fish in"

Me "No I can't I need to mature my filter so it can process Ammonia to Nitrite and Nitrite to Nitrate"

Owner (laughing at me) "No, no mate I think you're confused"

Me (Not very politely I'm afraid) "Mate if you run a fish shop and have never heard of a fishless cycle and how to run one then you need to hang your head, your ignorance and attitude have guaranteed that I will never bother you with my custom, why don't you have a go at reading one of those books behind you".

I don't play nicely with morons or being laughed at for my apparent stupidity I left the place fuming, firstly at his dealings with me and secondly at the thought of how many fish he must have had a hand in killing needlessly, no wonder he has been around so long he has guaranteed business from people re-stocking their tanks.

Unfortunately it you say "I don't know let me get someone" every time you get asked a question about the fish you don't know I'm sure at some point the boss if going to be a little cheesed that you don't seem to be doing much at all... I've had similar experience but involving birds, I knew nothing about them but had to sell them and answer questions. Most of it is general knowledge but sometimes a customer would ask me a question and I know I couldn't ask anyone else for help and if I said no and turned the sale down my boss would go ballistic. So normally... I went into the store room and came out with a book and said... "Let's see if the answer for your question is in here, as I am unsure." Normally everyone is more convinced if it's in text than spoken, some customers were actually enraged that I didn't know the answer about a single bird that is so specific that apparently they've been to 100 stores and this is the only one with one... yet if they're so specific and they're looking for them why do they have to ask so many question they know the answers to just to make them self feel superior...

However... I do it a lot myself lmao, always ask questions I know they will struggle on.

This isn't a "funny" story but it just drove me crazy when I saw this customers in the LFS and in their shopping cart they had tank, gravel, filter, everything to set up the tank along with bags and bags of fish and I was like "so, you must have another tank at home for all those fish eh?" The dude was like ''duh, no man, that's why I'm buying all this stuff, it's for all these fish". Me: "So you're just going to leave those fish in the bags until you set the tank up?". He says: "Well duh, yeah man of coarse, how else am I going to do it?" Me: "You know that adding all those fish in an un-cycled tank is probably not a good idea right?". Him: "Look man, I don't need to hear your posh scientific crap about "cycles", you don't even work here". Me: "No I don't work here but if I did, I wouldn't sell you any of those fish". He then told me to "f" off, lol! I told him I'd expect to see him back here in a few days after he killed off all his fish and needed to buy some more! :shifty:
