Hi,

I have a freshwater community tank which is home to:
Bristlenose Plecos
Gourami
Corys
Neon tetra
Various platy
and a zebra loch

For the last 6 month or so I have been using "Nutrafin Max" as their daily flake along with "Hikari Algae Wafers" and "JMC Catfish Pellets" alternate days for all the bottom feeders.
(and some cucumber every week!)

Mostly down to there claims that there food is more digestible than the competitors, hopefully leading to less waste.
I got hold of some "TetraPro Crisps" and "TetraPro Vegetable" which I mixed together to replace my daily flake food, which most of my fish are going crazy for.
I also got some "Spirulina tablets" (the stick on the glass type) which my algae eaters don't appear to be too impressed with.

What food do other people use?
Any food to avoid?
Which food is the best of the best?

I have recently started using an online company called "www.robbinsaquatics.co.uk" to get hold of my food, which I'm very impressed with.

Can anyone recommend other good online supplier's?

Plecc.

What

It sounds like you've already got the right idea. Its best to vary foods and its best to pay attention to the individual species you have and try to figure out what their individual needs might be. Its also good to do the obvious thing of observing and noting their reactions to various foods. I personally like plain old TetraMin flakes, the ones in the yellow/brown container. Also the Pro crisps. But there are plenty of fish with special needs so hopefully we'll hear some discussion.

Hi, as a change to cucumber for the pleccy, he will love courgette (baby marrow) . Slice the top off and lodge it under a log and see him go. Mine preferred it. He would pop out to see what was on offer, if it was cucumber, you could almost see the disappointment.. :) I look forward to your further answers on feeding.

I haven't tried any courgette yet, (mainly because we don't usually have any in the house)
But have heard that many Plecos prefer it to cucumber.
Think it also contains more nutrients and goodies than cucumber, but not too sure.

Will try and get hold of some this week and give it a trial run!

A friend mentioned that lot's of Plecos quite like fruit on occasion, any idea what types of fruit are suitable for them?

I was reading an article on BN Pleco breeding a few days ago, it mentioned that BN's are omnivores and require 5-10% protein in there diet to be happy and healthy breeders.

Is this correct? And if so should I be feeding extra protein in some form, or will they get it from my regular flake food?

Feel free to post about any positive or negative experiences with freshwater food's and supplement's.

Thanks Plecc

I like to feed my fish Tetracolor flakes twice daily, and some Microcrabs Cyclopeeze it really brings our their color. For my Catfish I also add algae pellets once daily
