Hi

OK so I recently changed the filter in my tank and also added live plants but there is something seriously wrong.

The tank gets dirty very quickly (looks very brown in colour) and I have lost 3 fish in a few days. I went from:

7 neons
3 yoyo loaches
3 golden honey gourami

and I now have...

6 neons
3 yoyo loaches
1 golden honey gourami

I know the tank was overcrowded in the first place so could it be that they are fighting or is it something more serious like a bacterial infection?

Thanks
Andy

Did you keep the media from your old filter and put it in the new one?

If you changed everything, then you will have got rid of all your good bacteria, and the fish will probably have died from raised ammonia or nitrite levels.

As to why the tank doesn't look very clean; what size is the tank and what filter are you running? Do you have bogwood in the tank?

Ammonia spikes can cause the tank water to be dirty looking or green, Im betting that's what is goin on. You zapped all of your good bacteria, as fluttermoth says.

Hi

Changed the media with the filter but the levels have been ok when tested.

The tank is tiny, 13 inches in height, 19 inches in width and 10 inches deep so I think I really need to get a bigger tank and get everything right before I add fish as I was told the wrong info when I first started thanks to the wonderful pet shop!!!! There is no bogwood in the tank, just live plants from www.aquaessentials.co.uk and the filter is an underwater fluval filter.

One of my pet hates, another one with bad advice from the pet shop, grrrr! Not getting at you Gandy, just annoys me so much when I keep reading these posts.

I know CoIR1948 - I was fed so much garbage that I ended up loosing all my fish and had to start again, it was only thanks to the guys on here that the second time round was more successful.

You're not the first and unfortunately you won't be the last :(. I'm sure most people on here can say they've been given terrible advice from their LFS.

I can't list all the trash that I've had to deal with and re-learn after dealing with a couple LFS's here. Or the fish I've had to rehome b.c. I was told they would only get 5 inches and then they ate all my other fish and doubled in size in a month. I love this forum, very glad I found it
