Hey am new on here :p am in need of answers/ help.

Me and my partner have two tanks a 65l and a 215l
The small tank is going perfectly, but we have recently had an outbreak of whitespot in the large tank.
The tank had contained:
* 4 clown loach
* 3 mollies
* 2 bamboo shrimp
then we added
* 4 ghost knifefish
* 2 kissing gouramies
* 1 plec

I noticed the white spot after adding these fish, so i took the shrimp out and put them in the small tank and began to treat them with Protozin but it didnt seem to have any effect and sadly we lost 3 clown loach in the space of one night so i went to the store (who gave me the protozin) and they gave me a free bottle of the meds, he also said the the knifefish did not get whitespot. By the time i got home the last clown loach had died, by the next morning we had lost 2 of the knife fish, the other 2 are not to be seen??? Could this be due to the treatment, if it is i wish either a refund or more fish! The stores i have enquired in about the problem wont give me a straight answer, and its horrible to see the fish suffer.

Please help or give me advice on what to do.

Are the knife fish black ghost knifes or ghost glass knifes?
Both clown loach and BGK are sensitive to meds, adding a full dose to the tank may have done those left alive more harm than good,
try gradually increases the temp to 28C and continue treating in half doses

i actually just flinched at that stocking list, even as juvi's that's way too many fish for that small tank.

it's most likely the meds, most white spot meds are not suitable for some fish at full strength, clown loaches definately fall into this category, knife fish may well do although I'm not certain.

do some big water changes to get the meds out of the water, research which fish can handle white spot meds and which can't, seperate the remaining fish into two groups in seperate tanks based on your research, treat one tank at full strength, treat the other at half strength, in the mean time research the fish you own and the size tank they need and have a serious rethink of your stocking list.

Dont panic that was the fish for the big tank

did you cycle tank first? before adding fish :unsure:

kissing gourami=12 inches each
plec 15 inch+
knife fish get big aswell,,,were these fish juvis or full grown?

they are juvis, i was told the gouramies would nto get much bigger than dwarf gouramies.

did you follow med application correctly or did you just add a squirt?
also was the fish diagnosed prop for correct meds to be added?

I followed what it said on the bottle.

yes they are black ghosts, its such a shame coz they are so sweet looking. :-(

sorry, my mistake, mis read the post

none the less BGK are too big for a 215l tank
kissers are a bit big too and depending on species the plec may be

they were/ are only 2-3 inches long, how big do they get?? they are in apx a 3ftx2ftx2ft tank

Yes they are very nice fish, unfortunately your tank is really only big enough for 1 as they can show aggressive behaviour towards their own kind,
were they in the same tank at the store? At work we have to seperate ours for their safety.

Below is a quote taken from the BGK index
Note: A weak electrical sense guides the BGK around the tank, the fact that two BGK's can be kept in one tank is a controversial one. Usually you must have a larger tank (75Gallon+) to support more then one BGK,

anything from 20 to 24"

BGK's are reported as reaching up to 24" although i doubt if they will all get that size. you shopuld prepare yourself for 16"+ though which is too big for your tank

a good guideline to use is a tank should be 4 times the length and 1.5 tmes the width and height of a fish (obviously some species are more/less active so requirements differe) so by that reckoning for a BGK the tank needs to be 5' x 2' x 2'

no they were in 2 tanks at the store, 2 in one and 2 in another, we had them for a few days and they did not appear to be aggressive at all.

cor blimey, well i trust the store i go to, i do look around tho, i think its going around down here in bournemouth, as i have seen it in a few stores.

many agressive fish are fine as juvi's, when they reach 1 year to 18 months you'll come downstairs one morning to a bloodbath :unsure:

we were just saying because so many fish shops say oh yes they dont get big, then you end up with a 18inch plec :crazy:

ok also was you tank cycled befor adding the fish?

Sorry yes it was, i do trust the store i go to, he does tel us if it is not a good idea to get something.
