i think the problem in adding laterite will be mess, and tank disruption. Coupled with the fact that isnt as balanced as some other subsrtates I personally would give it a miss in your situation.

Planted tabs would be a good easy mess free and easy to use alternative. It will give you visible benefits and will help you on the learning curve that is a planted tank. No doubt, after a while you will be hankering for a full planted substrate and will want to go the whole hog and get something like eco coplete, ADA or tropica etc.

First steps first.. and for you I think this could be root tabs. I'm not very familiar with american online shops but this type of product is worth considering.

Cool I guess I'll be putting some into my 10 gallon as well

How much of this stuff should I use though? And I should only put it around the plants right? Like it would be a waste to spread it over the entire tank bottom?
