My ancient black molly (about 4yrs old) is the biggest fish in my tank (70l Jewel). When she dies I want to replace her with a fish of around the same size (5cms ish) that will be the large focal point of the tank. I would like something a bit more colourful and unusual. Not a great molly/guppy fan.

Other tank mates are all very peaceful and there is no fin nipping, chasing or agression.

5 neon tetra
3 rummy nose tetra
3 ember tetra and 3 male endlers (all tiny)
2 hill stream loaches
2 male platys
1 blind loach (small - hasn;t grown in 3 yrs)

Some kind of gourami, Or Some type of dwarf Cichlid. Rams are cute I personally love the Bolivian ram They are not Very colourful but really cute and fun. Keyhole cichlids. Not colourful but have awesome personality and a natural beauty.

You could look into Killifish. They are very colourful and you don't see them that often. Research them to see if they would work in your tank.

70 litre?

Strictly speaking that's its capacity, not it's dimensions. However if I used that as a retort, I'd be merely coving up the fact that I neglected to read the OP properly in the first place :)

Up the number of ember tetra's to 6 and go for a dwarf gourami, once you've rehomed the hillstream loaches.

I was mis-sold the hills stream loaches, but did lots of research on them once I had them. They are very happy, healthy and active. They eat the natural algae as well as tucking into algae flakes with gusto. I lowered the temperature of the tank to 24 degrees celcius and added an airstone and lots of plants to up the oxygen level.

The ember tetras shoal with the endlers, so seem OK as they are.

Was thinking dwarf gourami, or maybe a blue ram, as they might cope with the higher current better?

Will check dimensions later, but it is a rectangular Jewel tank.

I'm looking at getting a type of hillstream loach (theres several types) and NMonks (whose opinion I've got some respect for) advised me not to consider less current than 10-12 times tank turnover. So for a 60L tank, thats 6-700 litres per hour.

I wouldn't take it as gospel but that'd be enough for me to start doing some more digging with people who know more than me - might be worth posting on loaches.com. Alot of people fall into the trap of thinking, "well, they seem alright and happy now...." and it often doesn't end prettily.
