Apistogrammas, honey gouramis, there are also a few different kinds of rams....

Depends on which type, but I doubt bigger than 4 inches... probably max out around 3,, with females being smaller ofcourse.

Sort of confused here but if the tank is only 24 inches long and what 12 inches wide, I would not introduce more dwarf cichlids. One pair is two square feet is good and now look to mid and top tank dwellers. A school of tetras perhaps?

I thought a tank that size is too small for Rams? That's what size mine is. Not that I have room for them now but it'll be worth knowing in the future?

Lovely fish by the way.

P.s I get confused, are all these kinds of Chichlids bottom dwellers?

I'd agree with some of the other posters, a 2-foot tank would be rather risky to include another cichlid of any sort with the rams!

Fish along the lines of Pencilfish; Hatchets; Neon Tetra (after 6-month tank maturity); Cardinal Tetra (again after 6 months); Hengel Rasbora; Chilli Rasboara; Dwarf Emerald Rasbora; Pseudomugil genus Rainbows would be good candidates.

Thanks for your help so far, Can I ask what areas of the tank will this fish occupy ?

Are there any really unusual types I could look out for ?

I'm liking the idear of the Marbled hatchet fish :good:

These Three band pencils are also a nice fish

The Hatchets; Pencilfish; Pseudomugul Rainbows are all top-dweller options. All need 6+ groups and if you went for a group of Marble Hatchets and some Pencilfish, you would not want too much else in there with the Rams in a 2-footer.

With good filtration, you might be able to add one 6+ group of either of the Rasboras or Celestial Pearl Danios for the mid-water, leaving the Rams alone at the bottom.

I wouldnt put Gouramis in with Rams - I had a pair of Rams in with a honey gourami in a 250L tank. All was good until the Rams laid eggs then all hell let loose! They decided to lay in the half of the tank that the Gourami considered his and he wasnt going to give it up for anyone so there was constant serious fisticuffs!!

More or less any community fish is ok - outside breeding times they are fine but avoid bottom feeders such as corys as they wont be tolerated if eggs are laid.

My ram shares tank peacefully with corries and paradise fish, less aggressive than betta and gourami which they are related to.Mind you it's alone not a pair, don't know how the ram would treat the corries if it was breeding.

Ok thanks for that fishnovice, the choice by the looks of thing is getting bigger and better, I will be picking up the Rams tomorrow and also have a look what else they recomend I should keep with them.

Hmm, you night want to hold out on that Ram purchase...

From all the fish you have shown intrest in so far, the Rams should be going in last, because...
  • They are cichlids and all cichlids are territorial by nature. If you add them first, there is every chance they will call the whole tank "home." Any new additions thereafter will be called "invaders" in the Rams' eyes.
  • Depending on if you are thinking German or Bolivian Rams, these fish have a super-sensitive nature, along the same lines as adding Cardinal or Neon Tetra to an immature tank. For Germans, I'd be waiting something close to six months to give them a chance of surviving.
Ideally, you will have a list of what fish you are going to stock. You want to list them in order of hardiness and aggressiveness and then buy the hardiest and peaceful group first.

For example, when I setup my Rio240 originally in spring, I bought in order, usually every two weeks...

  • Some Rabbit Snails from "Des"
  • Six Pearl Danios
  • Two Opsarius (a bad choice in hindsight as they are territorial, but they were cramped in a ~75l shop tank with Striped Headstander and Climbing Perch, where they were playful... How things changed!)
  • Six Yellowtails
  • Six Denisonii Barb and Three Panda Garras
  • Another six Yellowtails
  • A female Lionhead Cichlid (or "mum" as she has been known as for the last week or two, with 14+ fry)
  • Six Humphead Glassfish (I'm still quite upset about losing a female yesterday after finding her gasping at the 540l surface and unable to stay upright for long

Hope this helps
