The thing with anything bright or colourful is that the betta is likely to see it as a rival.

You could try endlers. They are a relative of guppies and have very unusual colouring. Small, though, and might be nippy. There are actually loads of small, colourful, unusual fish. Rasboras, smaller rainbows, tetras . . . there are some very unusual varieties of each. Just need to be careful with a betta because they could all nip him.

Bettas are best in dedicated tanks with carefully selected tankmates. Also means you don't have the betta limiting what you can do with the main community.

How tall is your tank? It's probably the height the will stop you getting angels.

uber cool fish tank!!!!!!!!!!!
thanks mate its nice to hear im more impressed with how my unit turned out i made :) do you think its best to try get rid of my betta then so i could get a few different fish? and my tank is only 16" high not sure if that is tall enough

I think you're limiting yourself by having the betta in there (beautiful tank btw)... how about moving him into his own smaller tank? Then you wouldnt have to worry too much about what you add to your main tank :)

That's alot of unusual fish. :good:

personally, in a tank that size with the amount of cover provided i would try him with some peaceful fish. have that small tank for him ready to go just in case things go awry(and if it does work, then you have a nice q-tank or hospital tank for emergencies).
ive found that it is in small tanks where things go wrong with bettas and tankmates- just not enough room for more agressive fighters and they take it out on their "buddies". certainly steer clear of nippy barbs, gouramis, etc. that tank is very nicely set up. i love it :)
just my two cents
cheers

Soz thought you meant to go with your other fish in the 4ft aquarium cause if you want weird for the 4ft tank how about the african butterfly fish.
What about a small corydoras for your betta tank?.

No your right Misscomo its the 4foot tank i want ideas for different fish just tyres you dont see often it was originally to go with the betta but he can go in another tank i have now, love the zebra plec just very dear quite like the flame plec though may have to try find one, i was told today that elephant fish are quite peaceful and dont see them often so might get a few of them, see the knife fish today but heard there quite aggressive towards others? Liking the feedback on my tank nice to be appreciated :)

Glad u liked my ideas but i did hear that flame plecs can cost £50 don't know whether thats max price or not but they are very nice plecs.

What type of knife fish did you see? Only personally ever heard of ghost knifefish and clown knife fish.

Edited cause of spelling.

Elephant fish and knife fish tend to get pretty enormous - you're looking at over a foot long, if not much larger for many of the species. As I said before, you don't want anything bigger than 4-5 inches when they are adults.

The African butterfly fish are pretty interesting but you don't want to keep them with small fish as they are predatory.

An uncommon plec might be your best bet, and maybe a large school of some rare/unusual tetras? I think green fire tetras, cardinal tetras, glass bloodfin tetras and emperor tetras are awesome. You'd need to get all the same type so they can shoal properly, though.

Maybe some kilifish, if your water is soft enough? Check out the kilifish section. They tend to be really brightly coloured.

your tank is beautiful!!

which rainbow fish is it you have? dwarf neons will go really nicely

dwarf gouramis/honey gouramis/pearl gouramis are nice and peaceful

odessa barbs [keep these in a large group as the are boisterous!] pentazona barbs

Emporer tetras, glass catfish

a pair or apistogrammas im not sure how well your rams will get on with them though..

not entirely unusual per say but they are just pretty!
