What Type Of Sand Is Best

Whats the best way to clean sand with a syphon?

Do you jus hover it over the sand to pick up the dirt or do you stir the sand up and syphon out what floats up?

I know sand needs stirring about once a month due to gass build up.

i wash mine in a bucket i fill the bucket 1/3 with sand then put the bucket under a running tap as the bucket fills with water i give the sand a good stir with my hand then just leave the water running untill it runs clear

No sorry I meant once the sand is in during a routine water change?
