Dear all,

I have 2 golden wag tail platy's in a Fluval edge aquarium and they are starting to poo now. Dont know how to get the poo out and dont know when to do a water change again.

You need to get a syphon/vac and clean your gravel with that. At the same time it'll syphone out a percentage of the water. If you're cyclced then you need to do this about once a week (assuming all your water stats are fine) and you should probably change about 20-25% of the water at a time.

i haven't gott gravel i have sand!!

You have the filter running?

Surely so :D

A turkey baster will do the job of removing individual long strands of poop. I reccomend you pick up some malasian trumpet snails (very cheap - check this forum) they will keep the sand moving without damagin plants, and will break up/consume poop too :D

You can still vacuum up the 'detritus' from sand with a gravel vac - hold it about 1-2cm above the sand and move it about slightly - the waste gets sucked up while the sand stays put. As suggested above, Malaysian Trumpet Snails are useful - check the classifieds section.

u can still use a gravel vac on sand substrate. just be careful with it and dont stab it into the sand or ull suck a lot of it out. also be cautious of fish swimming near the suction end of the vac, avoid them as best u can

It's irrelevant whether you have sand of gravel. The fact of the matter is it needs basic cleaning. You asked for advice and you got it!

so what type of vac do you recommend and how much are they? And like in my question: when shall i do my next water change?

just a simple manual vaccuum, they're pretty cheap (£5-10), but try and find one with a 'small' head, to minimise sand uptake.

If you haven't done one recently then do it today. Do you have a test kit? Your Nitrate reading will be a good indicator of how often you need to do it but once a week seems to be about the recommended average.

Unless you didn't cycle in which case it's a while different ball game.
