What To Do With A Fish You Dont Like ?!?!

I've had a couple of black moors for about 18 months now. One is your typical moor with the developed eyes and fairly placid personality. The other is, for want of a better word, a little b**erd!

Whilst being a black moor his eyes never developed the bulbousness of your typical moor (could have been a cross breed but came from the same batch as the other one and has the same body shape) and this gives him an advantage in the tank due to having better eyesight.. He bullies the other fish at feeding time and will eat the food even if he's already eating. He'll just mouth it around and then spit it out to prevent the other fish from eating the food. I have to drop some food in the tank for him and then whilst he's distracted, drop some in for the other fish. He's eating all the plants that get put in the tank including anubias and java ferns whilst the other fish arent interested and is generally an anti-social little blighter.

I've thought of giving him away to someone but the girlfriend wont let me as she thinks its wrong to get rid just because he's a pain and see's it as 'character'. I've also thought of transferring him into a smaller tank on his own but that might be considered cruel after having being in the company of other fish for so long.

Do you have another tank ? If so move him there for a week on his own, then re-introduce him. This is not like a punishment, but gives the other fish a different experience without a bully, when you introduce him back there maybe a change. If you don't have another tank, maybe a good idea to get one, it can be used for bringing up fry or if there are medical needs etc, this is all I can offer as advice from reading up on lots of stuff, good luck!

The shop you bought it from may be willing to take it back, though I wouldn't count on getting anything for it.

Unfortunately I dont think the GF will let me give him away. Im in the process of planning a custom built 450 litre tank for another room and due to his..er..personality, I was thinking of putting all the other fish in the new tank and buy a 50L tank just for him in the kitchen. Some people consider it cruel to keep a fish on its own though so not sure. Possibly less cruel than giving him to someone who could end up inadvertently killing him.

Some fish are okay on their own, prefer it even. I don't know enough about your specific type of fish to advise on it, but it may be worth researching.

I think he sounds as though he's be fine on his own or maybe with some smaller tank mates? I dont know much about cold water/ gold fish set ups so im not sure what other fish you could have in there? But that would solve the company issue

Lol that is a possibility. Maybe just keep him alone then your gf can look after him and be in charge of his tank if she won't let you take him back Haha.

I haven't seen goldfish being too social anyway, so he might be fine like that. Maybe he'll get attached to the owners and become more playful. At least that's what I've noticed with fish that have no other one that looks like themselves (unless then they might hang out with other species for the sake of it).
