i was going to cycle my 240 litre tank with ammonia but i was told i can only do that as long as i stock the tank up all in 1 go.if i dont and i add the fish over a few months then some bacteria will dies off and some fish will die.so how should i cycle it as i cant afford to stock it all at once

In theory after a completed fishless cycle you can add a full tank,saying that you dont need too,its only based on what you've cycled the filter for to start with...

They are right in a sense,but if you can't afford to fully stock,then just add your initial stock,then gradually add when money permits,has long has you keep an eye on the stats when adding new fish you should be fine.

Yes, if you only add a small amount of fish after a fishless cycle, then some bacteria will die, as the fish wil not produce enough ammonia for them all.

But, you won't lose all the bacteria, and there's is no reason at all why any fish would die.

When you add more fish, the bacterial colony will expend again, with no problems. You should always feed sparingly and test frequently, in case of 'mini-cycles' when you add new fish anyway.
