Hi,

I've been on this forum since a long time, but I haven't posted since like...a year!

After my experiments with a planted tank turned into a complete disaster, I decided to go in for a nice goldfish setup. I did my homework. It was a 23 gallon tank, so I couldn't keep more than 3 goldfish. They needed a good filter, so I bought a nice Atman 1100 l/hr internal filter, with I used along with a small sponge filter I already had. I kept only one goldfish for a month, in order to start the nitrogen cycle. Then I bought two more, including a nice one I called Orru-chan (short for Oranda-chan).

All seemed to be going well, until they started dropping dead. I couldn't figure out the reason. I had done everything right, everything from regular water changes to feeding them veggies to prevent swim bladder disease. They didn't show symptoms of any disease in particular. I thought it must be an ammonia spike...but how?

There was a slight mouldy growth on one of my bogwood pieces, but a quick google revealed that it was nothing to worry about. Quite common, infact some fish (like pleco) even eat it!

I gave it another try, and this time also all the fish met with the same fate. And I tried once again, and failed. I don't know how many goldfish I have killed...

I consider myself to be an intermediate level hobbyist. I've kept tanks for 4 years now, and never before has something like this happened. Heck, I've even made a freakin' website about keeping fish, seems ironic that I haven't managed to keep goldfish properly. I wonder what I should do..

Should I just quit?
Should I give up on the goldfish and go back to tropicals? I had great success with them...
Or should I try goldfish again?

No, I can't afford one. They cost over 1000 bucks here. :(

But I can get my hands on a product called AmmoNil, that neutralizes ammonia.
