My swordtail had fry about a week ago now and I've managed to scoop out about 25 - 30 fry and I've put them into a little circular, clear container/bucket as I don't want them to be eaten by their parents. My mum Told me we would get a tank for them (the other tank we have is 112L which is about 30 gallons) but I don't think we will ever get another tank for them as my mum hates spending money on the fish :S getting the 112L was bad enough for her.

For the past week I've been using a tube, siphoning (with my mouth, but not letting anything actually go near my lips, lol. Only once when i forgot to stop >.<) bits of rotting food and waste into a bucket and then pouring treated water back into the container.

We have loads of containers, the biggest being around 10L (2.5 Gallons), If I can get her to buy a sponge filter would they be alright in there? I've showed her basically everything i need for the fry but she has made no attempt to even ask me about them let alone buy anything for them.

When they're big enough I plan to ask some local fish stores if they would like some or putting the ones that survive (if any survive..) into the tank with their parents.

Seeing as the main tank is planted well, and I've had 1 swordtail survive from the last batch which i didn't even know was in there, I'm going to leave any other fry that I see in the tank with their parents and hope for the best.

Your 2 1/2 gallon container will serve the fry better than a smaller one. Swordtail fry should be able to quickly grow too large for that bucket. A larger bucket would be a better home for them and, if you change water often enough, a filter is not really needed.
