What Pump Flow Rate For 88ltr Tank

A good starting guideline would be to take your 88L/23G and calculate a 5x turnover rate, which would give you a recommendation for a 115G/435L flow rate. All rates are per hour. This guideline is not the "be all end all."

The flow rates and turnover rates refer to water flow through the tank, caused by the filter pump. The flow through the media within the filter is a different thing and is determined by the designer of the filter. There is not hard and fast rule for this. In the old days I would have said that HOBs generally have more media than internal filters (more media means slower actual flow through the media, which is better, within reason) but its not clear to me that internals have not now come up to pretty much have quite a range and probably overlap HOB designs. Cannisters probably still have superior design in general in this regard, having considerably bigger media volume, lower water-through-media pass-through rates and thus better filtering.. in general.
