has anyone got any recommendations about what living plants to have? i dont have a huge tank but something which will look nice
thanks

You probably want to check to see what your LFS has in but you want something simple that is easy to grow. Cryptocoryne species grow well in most tanks and come in different colours and sizes, Vallis isn't too difficult unless you have soft water. Anubais will also grow well for beginners although slowly.

You could also try some stem plants like Cabomba, Elodea or something similar. A lot of new fishkeepers have a fair bit of luck with them.

Just try and stick to simple plants at first and see where you go.

I would +1 about the cryptocorynes.

In a small tank, I would probably steer clear of Vallis. It is is dead easy to grow, but it grows pretty big. I had some in a 65l tank, and constantly had to trim it back (like every 3-4 weeks). You could also try Java Moss, a floating plant, again very easy.

Anubias is a good plant to opt for.  Java fern too.    Both attach to wood or stones fairly easily - use thread or super glue.     Google it for a how too.   Hygrophila is an easy stem plant to grow in the back of the tank and won't need high lights or ferts.
As above.....Cryptocoryne's are a good bet too.   Can wilt abit when first planted, but then they come back strong!!!

How big is your tank and what kind of substrate do you have? What is your lighting?
