What Medicines Do You Keep?

What medicines do you keep on hand? I really only keep some sort of ich treatment, but that is about it. Most of them are just rubbish. Oh and I have always wondered, you know the API Anti bacterial Melafix, does it actually kill bacteria? Wont it kill filter bacteria?

i dont use melafix i just add tee tree oil to the water, (melucca) if you read the bottle it contains water and tee tree oil, and doesnt harm bacterial levels in filter because its not strong enough, i think it kills some, pimafix is the same but for fungus i think thats bay tree oil and because they are natural products they are kinder than others they also may not work as well, i always have protozin, esha 2000, and a couple of others that ive never even opened.

The other thing i always have and i keep away from the tanks and in the medicine cabinet is clove oil, if a fish is seriously in distress and im totally and uttally sure that the fish will die during the night or buy the time i get home, i put them in a jug with a few inches on water and add a couple of drops of clove oil, in a minute the fish is dead, it just saves it being bullied by other fish or eaten i think ive done it three times in 20 years.

Myxazin for the betta's fin rot and cuprazin for fungus or white spot, can't remember which. I also have random bits that I've picked up too, like a couple more natural medications and more fin rot treatments!

The type of bacteria that perform nitrification are very different from the type of bacteria that infect living creatures - Melafix won't affect filter bacteria. It is believed to work in other ways than simply by killing the bacteria, as well.

Teatree oil.
though melafix is only teatree oil and water, there is another important ingredient. an emulsifier. which one you use, and how much,. dictates how effective it is. its not too effective without one though. as you would imagine, the oil floats, then sits on top of the water, doing very little. even after the most vigorous shaking.

apart from that, nothing. in truth, i have never needed meds, except the teatree oil concoction for the Cray, after a bad moult.

think about it. what does it say if a keeper needs a cupboard full of meds, just to keep his fish?
without any offence,. would any one here buy from such a keeper?
because we see lots of moaning, if treatment is seen in an LFS, especially if its regularly seen.

any road, with my luck, I'd have £100 of meds and need the one i aint got!

I think that is a very bold statement regarding keepers and a "cupboard full of meds". I have lots of meds on hand *just in case*. You never know if disaster is going to strike and id rather be ready for it, not that Ive had to use them often at all. I also like to not have to rely on the stores being open or even carrying what I need in an emergency. Its no different that people keeping asprin or cold remedies in the medicine cabinet. You hope you dont have to need them but are prepared, just in case. Most imortant thing is to make sure your meds are up to date. @ meds I feel every keeper should always have on hand are aquarium and epsom salts. Very useful and cheap and treat a variety of ailments.

I have had 16-19 tanks up and running for over a decade. A lot of the fish I keep are wild caught. They frequently need treatment. I also spawn a number of fish and here too meds can be needed. I have yet to meet anybody who has multiple tanks and some level of turnover in their stocking who has never needed any meds.

No matter how careful any fish keeper is in their habits, there is never any guarantee that any newly acquired fish arrive completely healthy and totally free of any ailments. And the stress of transport can be enough to weaken a fish's immune system so that it can't fight off something.

I keep the meds on hand that I listed because experience has taught me that fish will always get sick when stores are closed, And even when the stores may be open, almost none stock a number of the meds that work the best- especially for dealing with parasites and worms. Since I can afford to keep a med box with items that may never get used before they expire means I have a way to deal with a lot of things before they can wipe out a whole tank or fish room.

I have a cupboard full of meds as I like to be prepared.
I have fluke solve, sterazin, protozin and esha2000 along with aquarium salt.
I've kept fish over 16 years and have always had meds to hand.
The key is knowing when you need to use them.

a fungus/bacteria clearer, an ich treatment,metronadazole,and wonderful wonderful salt:] im thinkin about gettin some clove oil??what are some thoughts on that shtuff?
