Just got a new external filter-but doesn;t come with filter media!!
Have been trying to research what Type I should put in there!!I really don;t know which one to go for -sponges or ceremic balls!!
Any ideas-greatly appreciated!!

I have a trickle filter which may be different. I use from the top (inlet) 1" fine woolen media, 1 layer of ceramic noodles, 1" coarse foam media equaling 396 qu. in.

There's no great need for carbon unless you're actively trying to remove mediction etc from your water.

Personally I use a combination of Eheim EHFI Substrat, EHFI Mech and sponges.

knowing the filter make would help, often the media used is dependent, on the number of sections the media basket has, as said above from the bottom up:
course sponge, ceramic rings, bio media ( pumice, bio balls or ceramic cakes), filter wool, to polish the water. carbon can be added on top, but only really for removing meds, or short term use for clearing a cloudy tank.

what brand and model is the filter? what fish are in the tank and is it planted?

Your media usually depends on what the requirements are for your tank, but a pretty standard make up is a layer or 2 of ceramic rings or equivalenet (eg bio balls), a layer of course filter foam and then a layer of dine filter wool to "polish" the water

Its not a branded one(saving up for a fx5) which will do for now just to get that extra filtration!!Thanks for all the quick responses!!!

Think I will go with the combination of sponge and bio balls-I've got the juwel filter with the sponges running alongside !!
