What is this growth on my pleco?

Hi I noticed this on my bristlenose late last night, does anyone know what it is and how to treat it?

It looks like bristles.
Is there a little clump on the other side of the face too?

They are a different colour to his bristles and are only on one side of his face. He's about 4 years old so I would definitely have noticed them before.
I'll try and get a photo of the other side so you can see.

It looks like he’s flexing his spines out. Do they only pop out sometimes?

It does look like bristles but very odd.
