i am planning on purchasing some automotive LEDs from here and i am also planning on buying some aquarium lighting, moonlighting to be exact and i am wondering which color LEDs would be best for the moonlight... Blue, or UV (purple) and 3, 4, or 8 LEDs.

3 blue

lol try red!!! then the fish think its dark and you can see them fine! but if you like blue, keep clear of th uv they can make the tank look cloudy!

personally I've found cold cathodes are best
whatever you go for don't go for the purple (blacklight)
the UV will be harmeful to aquatic life.

actually many fish can see well into the red-infra red spectrum
it is the blue end of light most fish can not see

2x 4" would do but 2x 12" would do better
you can always dial down the voltage if they are too bright for your tank

i found a 12v inverter and a connector for different 12v items for less than $8 on that webpage in my first post. how would i adjust the voltage? i cant find anything at any radioshack near me.

you need a variable voltage transformer
like those sold for use on different games consols
often comes with a cross at the other end containing different size male conectors
