i was just wondering, if you happened to all of a sudden have no fish in your tank then would all the friendly bacteria in the filter die off due to not being able to feed on fishy waste products and waste chemicals ?

Yes. If you had a cycled filter, and no fish in the tank producing waste (ammonia), then the bacteria will eventually start to die. If you need to keep it going without fish, you need to dose with a few ml of ammonia. You want the kind of ammonia that is just ammonia and water. No chemicals added.

thanks for the answer i was curious as i had lost a few fish lately, and was thinking of re-homing what fish i had left (i decided i wanted a change in fish stocking). then i wanted to get on with planting my tank up before i added fish to it again so i wondered if i could do this without my cycled filter dying off
