is there a stage when all the babies just up and disappear? maybe back into the nest and you can't really see them? i woke up this morning and checked to see how they were doin and NOTHING! i immediately assumed Zoom, my male, ate them all so I started telling him he better spit those babies back out or he's dead meat, he looked at me and swam off like he was ignoring me. so, is this normal to find all the babies missin? are they back in the nest growing and getting to be better swimmers? or they hiding somewhere? or did my male eat them?

What day did the eggs hatch? If they could be free swimming by now, there's your answer... they're probably just spread all over the tank, and they're trying to hide of course. Pull Zoom out now, and just keep looking for them. They tend to gather in corners of the tank, and check any plants you've got in there. Now's the time to start small feedings of microworms or vinegar eels, and turn on a sponge filter very, very low so it makes one bubble a second.

i think the day before yesterday is when they hatched. they were swimming pretty well last night, but still in the up and down position, they'd fall n swim back up... i already got one going, it lets out a bubble every 45-60 seconds. ok, ill pull him out, he seems depressed.

Not depressed, just worn out from trying to keep all the little guys in the nest. Spoil him and the female with lots of food... re-condition them, basically... and they should perk up for you.

I'm crossing my fingers that the fry really are in there, and weren't a midnight snack!

they were a midnight snack... i looked all over the tank, wearing a plastic medical glove so i didnt contaminate the water n moved the two plants sittin on the bottom n moved the one floating, no babies anywhere, just completely clear n clean water everywhere, no babies... i told zoom if he didnt spit them back out id make a sushi roll out of him, i threw him back in with the stinky apple snail and fed him instead. next time he gets taken out as soon as there swimming good in the up n down position (i'll keep the water level low for them), but i aint giving him another chance to chase down his babies n have a snack.

males are soemtime awsome dads sometimes not, and the mood of an indavidual male can vary from spawn to spawn. my first breeding male was a model dad his first tiem but ate most of the fry the second time. i hear that first tiem dads often eat the eggs or fry but are better with experiance. trial and error.. beter luck next time.

all the best
