My fiancé has a 20 Gallon tank and just got a Male Betta for it today. Has anyone got any suggestions on what fish he can put with it?

Thanks!

Maybe some Cories...Bettas don't generally like company. They seldom do well with colourful fish, or long finned fish. Also, a lot of fish are tempted by the Bettas long fins and will be nippy.

i would say platys most people would disagree but my gf has a crowntail in with 2 platys in her tank and has no problems what so ever

Putting a male betta in a 20g is a pretty bad idea. It would server perfectly for a community tank and by putting in a betta, not only are you giving it way more space than it needs, you are also making the tank unable to be used as a community tank, UNLESS he gets a divider.

Thanks for your suggestions everyone :)

That is exactly why he did it. We hate it when we hear of all these people keeping them in tiny little vases and tanks. He wanted a Betta so that's what he got and it's now living in a new large home rather than some stupidly small tank. I already have two large community tanks so he wanted something a bit different than I have.

I beg to differ. I have...

1 Male Betta
2 Neons
2 Danios
4 Corys

And that's in a 50L tank (10g is it?)

But i'm not saying that ALL betta's would be fine in this set up. They all have they're very own and unique personalities. My current betta tends to be more bothered about his reflection than any of the other fish mind!

As long as you've got plenty of hiding places for other fish if there is conflict and don't get anything too colourful or flimsy (guppy's, molly's, platy's etc) that could pass as another betta (they've been know for confusing guppy's as bettas!) then you're fine.

Although like I said, it all boils down to the personality of the fish and how territorial they are.

Like I said, mine's fine with his tank mates, never been bothered in the slightest about them :D

There are a large number of threads very similar to this in the betta section, but I will add my two pence. I kept a male betta in a 1 foot cube tank, along with 6 cherry barbs and 5 oto cats, and there was no aggression on either side. All depends on the personality of the betta.

I currently keep male bettas with endlers and dwarf corydoras and have often kept them with platies. I even have one in a large, 120 gallon, community tank. The one in the community tank has had some problems with aggressive fish nipping his fins but is otherwise doing fine with them. The betta is not causing problems but with nippy fish he can become a victim.
