What fish species is this?

I really need to know

it looks a bit like a juvenile grunter but it depends on which country you live in and where you got the fish.

It is definitely not a grunter because we live in California and got them from the La river we just want to identify the species of the fish. Should i tell you their behaviour?

It could be anything if it's an introduced species that has been dumped into a local river. Your best bet is to contact or visit the website of your local Department of Fisheries (Fish & Game I think you lot have). They usually have a list of native fishes in the local waterways and a list of introduced species.

If you can't find anything on their website then email them a picture of the fish and see if they can ID it for you.
