'New' Nannostomus species

I saw these listed for sale at Dan's, and thought they looked remarkably similar to Denison barbs...

funny how fish from different areas will evolve similarly...
The pictures are misleading esp of the barb as it is much larger as an adult - and when it fills out it looks more like a shark.

It's called convergent evolution, and it's a very cool thing to look at.

The sizes of those fish are radically different. I'm uncertain nature's behind the red beckfordi - I believe that's a linebred.

Good eye, @GaryE . That lot of N. beckfordi at Dan's are Czech bred. The only Nannostomus I am aware of that are currently being farmed in Asia and line-bred in Europe. So the coloration is an enhancement of wild coloration.

And as others have noted N. beckfordi mature at under 2" while Dawkinsia denisonii max out at over 5".

not a shark in my book, and neither are bala's or roselines...

The red-tailed black shark (Epalzeorhynchos bicolor; syn. Labeo bicolor), also known as the redtail shark, red tailed shark, and redtail sharkminnow, is a species of tropical freshwater fish in the carp family, Cyprinidae.

Epalzeorhynchos bicolor is just a grumpy barb relative - the one they don't invite into the inner family because he believes in conspiracies and fights with everyone else.

I'm pretty sure I saw them just yesterday in a chain store that has good fish in my country. In person I'd say they're really interesting

@Velvetgun - if you are talking about red tailed sharks, yes, they are beautiful. In Italylast year, I saw a wild boar running in a field. It too was beautiful, but I wouldn't put it in my kitchen. Red tailed sharks can be very aggressive after the lights go out, and have destroyed many community tanks. Their beauty is unfortunate.

Well they require that beauty to be put into a position to hunt ;)
