hi all,posted this in tropical chit chat & was told to post it here.iv got a 3ft 35G (uk) cold water tank (temp is naturaly 75/76 degrees F summer & winter) with 6 white clouds & 6 peppered cory catfish (2 adults,4 juveniles).what other fish could i have?id like atleast another group of some sort of hardy small fish plus maybe a couple of smallish (no bigger than 3 inches) center piece fish.any ideas apprechiated as i really dont know what to get (or what i can get without over stocking).i searched the fish index for ideas but there are too many fish out there .so any personal experience with cold water fish stocking or any ideas are much apprechiated!!! thanks in advance!! shaz

White clouds are sub-tropical fish and peppered corys can live in a wild range of temps (15-25 degrees http://www.planetcatfish.com/catelog/speci...?species_id=271 ), so since you already have two fish that would thrive best in temps around 20-23 degree's, i would go about setting up the ideal habitat for your fish.

Other fish (many of which are hardy or easy to keep) that prefer sub tropical temps and can go in your tank depending on the numbers are;

a. Many danios out there are sub-tropical fish including leopard, zebra and pearl danios etc;

b. Bloodfin tetras are renowned for their peaceful but easy to keep nature and do well in sub tropical temps;

c. The weather/dojo loach;

d. Hill stream loaches;

Remember to provide strong filtration supply the water with a hearty supply of oxygen, this will improve the well-being of many sub tropical fish out there as many come from mountain streams (like white cloud mountain minnows or hillstream loaches) where the current is strong and well oxygenated :nod: .

hi Tokis-Phoenix,i like the idea of the bloodfin tetras,i think they would go well in my tank.how many do you recommend i get?i love danios but have heard that there jumpers & since my 3 year old likes to help me feed & do water changes etc i dont think they would be a very good idea,lol.the weather/dojo loach gets too big for what i want.iv done the goldfish thing where the fish have out grown the tank (i put them in a pond) so this time im trying to keep things smallish,so the fish will always have pleny of space.

hi lucy-fish,paradise fish look absolutly beautiful,definatly worth considering.iv never heard of these before.one thing tho,i read that they like still water & iv got two filters in the tank,an eheim (suitable for 25G tank)which is for the hospital tank when needed & a fluval (suitable for 60G tank).the fluval creates alot of surface current so would this be suitable for paradise fish?i wouldnt want to put them in the tank if its not suitable.

thanks both for your help!!shaz :D

Because they are shoaling fish i would advise anything between 6 and 15+ for a 35 UK gallon tank depending on how many other fish you go for :) .
I keep both zebra, leopard and pearl danios and they are excellent fish full of energy that do well in longer, cooler tanks like yours- in my experience of keeping them over the last couple of years i have never had one jump out of the tank though.
They are insectivores/omnivores, i think most jumping incidents in danio's can be put down to crampt conditions, agressive tank mates or the danios trying to catch insects which fly above the tank surface. Basically, jumping out of the tank often happens purely by accident or when the fish is teribly stressed. But given that all fish have the ability to jump out of tanks, i think the danio's reputation for jumping is no more than say a betta or molly.
A secure tank hood that properly covers the tank is all that is needed to stop any fish jumping out :nod: .

cheers for that Tokis-Phoenix,what i think i might do then is forget the centre piece fish & go for a shoal of bloodfin tetras & a shoal of zebra danios as iv seen these at my lfs (the hood on the tank is very secure so that the little un cant move it).so with my 6 cory & 6 white clouds,how many tetras & danios can i fit in with out being too overstocked cus even though the filter iv got in there is nearly double the size i need for the tank,id like the fish to have enough swimming room?im not planning on adding any more fish to the tank after this lot except maybe a couple more cory once they get big enough (there fry at the mo).
thanks for all your help. shaz :D

I doublt be paradise fish would like the surface current as they are like bettas and take air from the surface and with waves of water in the way it wouldnt be so easy.
