hi everyone

ok if any of you were in a situation of not being able to get plants cause of where you live and you didnt say.......have the internet
then what household type of things would be siutable for protection of fry, ive heard of cleaned wine bottles, marbles, etc....
anyone got the unusual type of things that you wouldnt think of using.
got a friend who needs to know but im stuck with answers...........

The obvious one are spawning mops although these aren't really for the protection of the fry.
I use plastic trays from a chinese take-away to hatch cory eggs in.

thanks for the reply but i should have mentioned its for livebearers

anyone else??????????? fry due any day now

Marbles work for some livebearers, It depends when how the fry react normally for example swordtails sink and lay there for a couple of days so marbles are good, others stay at the top and for that i have no idea.
I once used those plastic fake grass that worked, and have thought about using a couple of plastic brushes.

I suppose you could section the tank half way with some gauze.

Sometimes if you get cotton wool and put a ball fluffed up in the tank the fry will go hide in it, you can also float this, You must check it often as fry can get stuck. And it saves quite a few of the fry. What livebearer is it for ?

All the best

I wonder if this would be safe:
A bunch of pipe cleaners winded together to look like a big fluffy plant, wighed down by a rock, would this work??

If it's the bendable/shapeable type of pipe cleaner, those have a metal core that may not be good for the fish?

was wondering......would the fake plants that you put in your home work in a tank or is that a bad idea

I'd think they would be fine, if they're completely plastic. If they have bendable stems that keep the shape you bend them into they probably have a metal core. You can often see the metal (if it's there) at the bottom of a stem, especially if you cut off a piece.
