What Do You Think My Severum Is?

I just bought this little guy I had to have him he was $4 and miss labelled at store. They did not even know what they were. So since I know what it was I had to take one home. Don't worry I'm getting a larger tank in a year my husband agreed I will be getting 100+ tank so when this little guy gets big he will move there.

He is only 1" right now and lives in a 55 gal with a 4" blue acara and 2" EBJD. They all get along. It's so much more fun to watch different types of cichids interact then to watch a pair just bother each other IMO.

Anyways here is my little guy he is doing great. I named him or her Nip because she has a nip out of her dorsal fin. I think it is just a Green Severum but I am not 100% sure. What do you think.

I hate how the water spots always show up on my photos I need to clean the outside of my tank. OH WELL.

That MIGHT be a Rotkeil most greens that I have seen have red anal fins and yours looks as though it may be yellow??.

Good deal if it is, only paying $4!!

I also agree keeping and watching different cichlids is far more entertaining; I have a severum, festivum, angel and keyholes together and they all interact with each other and show absolutely no aggression - they all know Sev is the boss.

Its a Green severum (not a rotkeil, wrong colouring completely).

Sex wise, hard to say at that age, looks female right now, due to the rounded anal fin and no extentions on the dorsal fin, but this will more likely change as it grows.

i agree, its a green severum, id say its a female, even if not mature, the males would have a 'blunt' point to the anal fin.

yep deffinately a green not a rottie. and as minx says too small to sex at the moment. cute little sucker i love em when they are that small.

Hybrid between a Green Heros Efaciatus x heros Sp. Rotkeil imo.

It has the yellow trademark fin of a Rotty but has the 'spotting' of a normal green.


Has a Efaciatus face shape to...Rotkeila have a pointy face when small...more solid bars but tend to have the yellow fin unless hybrids...Standard greens usually have red,brown or clear anal fins as do Turqs,Sometimes golds and red spotteds have red anal fins to.

to me the anal fin on the ops sev is more brownish than yellow . will be interesting to see pics as it grows and colouration develops .

Yeh will be interesting...as they they tend to cross the limited stocks of Rotties with Efaciatus to get more 'Rotties' which tend to be more Efaciatus in body with a little of the Rotkiel colouring.

a lot of people ( myself included) end up with a rottie / efasciatus hybrid. basicly rottie colours only not so bright with reddish brown anal fin instead of yellow, also not so chunky as a true rottie .

Yeh its liek that in the UK...the Americans get loads of the real thing.

I have been told they are bred in Germany only for some reason so they demand stupid prices.

My local maiden head has a Male Rotty with 5 female Greens right now hoping they will breed so they can sell the off spring and tend to sell Rottys for £50 each for 1" specimens....i got misold my f1 rottie for £4...bargain and sold it for £30 when i switched to Mbuna lolol

lol had a result there then. yes they are terribly overpriced i paid 55 quid for mine but it was around 8 inches

Sounds like some of you guy's need to come to the Cichlid auctions that I go to. I bought 4 F2 Rotkiel's for £5.00. Seriously these shops overcharge by an unbelievable amount. This isn't me bragging, merely telling you to support your local auctions, and come away with bargains galore.

Back on topic, I think its a green sev. Nice one too.

Wow lots of good answers thanks guys. I can't wait to see what she turns out too look like but then again she is so cute right now. I personaly like the green I have seen some that are just stunning. It might be a hybrid the head shape just does not look pointy enough to be a rot. only time will tell for sure.

Snowflake...in your opinion..looking at it first hand, what colour would you say its anal fin is? I definitley think it is either a Green standard or a Green standard (Efaciatus) x Sp. Rotkiel.

Definitley not a Turq...which is not a bad thing as most Turqs are pretty bland/ugly (imo of course)

And Riverdog...tell me more man i'm very interested in Auctions...I'm currently after 5 Green Terrors (Gold Saum) or a Red Texas.
