What Do You All Think

Tried to do a poll (looks like it failed) on what people thought about some LFS selling fish to people who have very little knowledge of fish (like myself) without warning them that they arent suitable for the tanks

i.e the sucking chinese loach?

It would be nice to have some warning that cerain fish arent suitable for the community aquarium!

I know some shops do but alot dont let you know that you are making bad choices for your aquarium they just let you buy random fish that dont go well together!

Whereas the lfs if very much responsible, adn staff should make a point of knowing about the fish they are selling and should be asking what fish people have in their tanks, it is no only down to them.

People buying should make a point of telling the staff what they have, fish and tank-wise.

If the buyer is looking at a fish that they have no knowledge of prior to purchase, they should ask the relevant questions, such as "is it aggressive?". If the staff do not supply a convincing answer, ask if they have a book to consult, or better yet, do not buy the fish until you have had a chance to read up on it.

It is very easy to keep blaming the fish stores, but as much of the blame lies with people doing the buying. Sorry if that does not sit well, but it is true.

I see your point there as I have been warned previously against certain fish like when I tried to buy a tiger oscar....... I'm glad the lfs did inform me that it would not be suitable for what I had at the time.

In some stores though when you do ask for example like when i ended up with these Chinease algae eaters I initially went in for Ottos (which they had sold out of grrr)....... I asked what else would be suitable for my small aquarium and was told that these would be perfectly fine....... Unfortunately as I have found out today they arent!

It's easier said than done when you are trying to find out about fish esp if your a novice (which I'll be honest I am even though I have previously kept tropical fish) and dont normally have the opportunity to research what you are purchasing before you get to the store. And as I said you go into the store and ask about it and alot of them say its fine to mix species which you clearly can't as I have found. Also alot of stores have the fish marked completely wrong as my CAE's were sold as golden weather loaches which it turns out they arent.

I'm so glad I have found this site though as you guys are great at giving advice when needed.....

I'm glad of your opinion though it has made me think about what I should do in the future!

One thing I supose people could do is phone their LFS prior to going to find out about stock of particular fish.

If they don't have what you are and suggest something else, you can then research that fish.

If you then find that what you have researched when you get there, is not what they said it is, it is possible to correct them (at least tell them they are wrong) and not buy the fish...

That could work I suppose! I just wish there were more reputable LFS with the knowledge out there rather than your chain pet stores with aquarium section it would be alot better after all they research they're reptiles etc so I dont see why the fish should be any different!

Oh well I suppose its all just a learning curve at the end of the day!

Actually, I reckon LFS shouldn't need to be telling people. Taking responsibility for own research is key IMO.
However, LFS should ALWAYS label fish clearly and accurately with both common and latin names and should be shot if they give inaccurate or dishonest advice. Well, that might be a bit harsh, but you know what I mean...
