ok i asked a really detailed question like this before but now im just going to ask a more generic one because i really need some more help...

What causes fish to gasp for air?

How can you fix it to make them stop?

are there any type of fish that normally keep there mouth up from the water and try to sip from the top allottttt?

thanks

the same thing that makes you and I gasp - lack of oxygen.

get the surface of the tank moving more by pointing the filter outlet upwards of by adding an air pump and stone ;)

Do a water test also, an ammonia spike can make them do that since it makes them unable to get enough oxygen into the gills. Don't ask me how I know

What kind of fish do you have?
How long have they been in the tank?
How long has the tank been up and running?
Has the tank been cycled?
And finally what are your water test results?

Then the Pro's (read: not me, lol) can come in and help you get this under control.

As I understand it the uper portions of the tank are richer in oxygen, so when they hang out up there they are trying to breathe.
