I'm afraid tiger barbs would not work, as they need to be kept in groups of 8-10 min, and are fairly aggressive in smaller groups.

With a male convict, they would not get a long. (Both being aggressive fish)

Also, the convict alone should be in at least a 20 gallon tank, unless he is not full grown yet?

Dwarf Cichlids maybe. They are not that aggressive, but should still be kept in groups, and when doing that he should move them all to a larger tank, as a 10 gallon would be too small.

EDIT: Best to get some more convicts or another type of aggressive Cichlids like Cichlids from lake Malawi (African Cichlids)

But he would have to get a larger tank to do this.

hmmm... he has him and her in a 29 gallon. along with 2 rainbow sharks and a pleco... would he be best leaving them all in the 29 and doing something else with the 10? or maybe just have the male alone in the 10? or even the female alone? what would be best??

I would say leave the male and female convict in the 29 gallon, just because a 10 gallon is too small for a convict.

For the 10 gallon though, he could get a school of tiger barbs(8-10), or have a pair of dwarf cichlids in there, which I think would be pretty cool.

a female convict would be the best match

i also think its not big enough for 1 adult convict...remember they will get much bigger

I wouldnt say any of them were small enough for a 10g.

You certainly could not put 8-10 tiger barbs in a 10g tank as suggested above, tiger barbs need far more room, more like a 40+g tank.

I wouldnt suggest any dwarf cichlids with a convict either as they are too aggressive for the dwarves.

I'm surprised he hasn't had problems with the two rainbow sharks - unless they have both set up territory at either ends of the current tank and avoid each other. They don't usually do well in two's.

Anyway, seeing as they don't grow much bigger than 5-6", I would say that one of the rainbow sharks could be kept in the 10 gallon (I'm presuming it's a 2ft tank) - but as to what could go in with the RS, that could be a problem because he would probably claim the whole tank as his territory and could become aggressive with any other tankmates. Your friend could let the RS have the 10 gallon to himself - but he may think that was a bit of an extravagance and not too appealing seeing just 1 fish in a whole tank! Maybe he could add a few African Dwarf frogs with the RS?

Just suggestions.

Definitely don't keep a convict in the 10gallon, though.
