What Bichir Should I Get?

i am wanting to buy a bichir species. i have a 55 gallon community tank with large fish.should i get an ornate bichir, a dinosour eel bichir, or a ropefish.

Ornate will get too big, dinosour eel bichir will be senegal bichir;s theyd be ok as would palmas species. Rope fish are not bichir's just closely related, theyre smart but ideally need to be kept in groups.

I'd go with senegal as they're reativly cheap and available.

What else do you have in the tank? I've had my bichir's eat fish around half the size of them so be carefull

That sized tank, you are pretty much limited to the smaller sized upper jaw Polys.
If you are willing to spend a little more, there are some gorgeous "rarer" upper jaws out there.

Or get a bigger tank, and go for a upper/lower jaw mixed poly "pile" tank as i have done.

Senegals yes, not known anyone breed rope/reed fish before

Poly's are really easy to sex too so you should easily be able to get a group of mixed sex species.

You can sex them at pretty young age with ease.
You go by the Anal fin.
