Could just be the worrywart in me, but I've not seen this before (these are my first plants, after all) and, naturally, I have concerns about snail infestations and such. But maybe this is normal, like the fern is getting ready to "reproduce", in it's own way (I know I read somewhere about things on the underside dropping off to grow by themselves?). But some of these remind me of devils with horns, so... lol, here I am.

I tried, but I couldn't get any clearer pics. I put up with Sweeney nipping me just so I could use a few fingers to push the fern leaf closer to the camera, lol

Also, there's a nice layer of a fuzzy algae growing on a couple of leaves, which is the hairy appearance you'll see in the pics. If that is any relation to the bumps.

Ruh roh, devil with horns!

Those 'bumps' are normal. Java fern grows new plantlets on their leaves so that is what those are, eventually when they grow you'll be able to propigate them.

The fuzzy algae is just algae, gently rub it off with your fingers and it'll be fine :)

Have a look in the planted tank section on tips on dealing with algae if it's a problem in your tank and succesful plant keeping :)

Ah, thank goodness! I'm not worried about the algae (I had a worse problem with it before I switched the silk plants with all live plant, so the fact that the only algae is now on the tips of two leaves on the java fern... well, like I said, I'm not concerned, lol). Those little bumps just looked so "out there," especially since the front of one of the leaves looks a bit like it's got blackheads (must be castoff from cleaning the fine gravel substrate). Glad to hear this is normal; now I'm going to watch these bumps and see them evolve, lol
