As per title, i was told this is know as a red flash barb, but google didn't agree. Any idea what fish this is? Its almost 5" long, has a very distinct red strip and very distinct yellow stripe.

Actually, i just found it after all. Denisoni Barb. Would have deleted this but i dont know how.

Punitus denisonii, Redline Torpedo Barb. Should reach ~15cm; social fish; loves strong water current; is well suited to a heaterless tank that changes temp through the seasons (they have been recorded in 15C waters) but on average stays no higher than 20C.

Bingo. Maybe a tad warm in my tank , and i've just added 6 flame tetras so not going to have room when they grow up.

Also a bit expensive at £10+ each. perhaps when i get that 80gallon tank for the loaches :hyper:

Would of thought 80 gal may be a bit too small for a group of these? I was told they need around 400-500 litres with a tank of 5 feet long or more? May be wrong though :)

loaches = high temps, red lines, low, not a good mix. expensive fish to kill, tbh :) i love red lines, but cant have them :<

What about ideal tank size? I will soon have an empty rio 400 and wouldn't mind keeping some if they would be ok in that sized tank. I can work the stock around them..

And sorry for hijacking the thread, just easier than opening a new one on the the same topic :)

A Rio400 is a great size tank for them, its only a tiny bit smaller than my 5x2x2, where I have a small group (now only 5 after losing one in early June). They might just about "work" in a large volume 4-footer, but my group make full use of the 5-foot length and love swimming against ~8000lph of flow firing along the front length of their tank.

A few good candidates to be tankmates are things like...
Corydoras paleatus/trilineatus
Schleromystax barbatus
Danio frankei
Macropodus opercularis (if you can sort out some calmer areas)
Pethia conchonius
Ilyodon furcidens/xantusi
Opsarius (plus the formerly known Barilius)
Glyptothorax spp.
