Christmas this year has, for the first time, shown evidence that my family are aware that I keep fish.

They're a great family, and they know enough to do a little bit of research, and a little knowledge is a dangerous thing.

They've managed to get together and buy me a new light for my fluval ebi, that I had to move stock out of as the light had blown. I'd meant to buy a new light for it, but had other empty tanks with lights up already, so I stripped it back for a rescape and hadn't had time to mess with it. At the beginning all appeared to be going well, with one present revealing a goose neck lamp stand, and a slight shock as the next revealed the marine lighting system to go on it. Turns out that they'd also picked up that I'd love to have a reef tank at some point, so had done enough googling to find a suitable light for a nano-reef.

A few other bits and pieces of marine kit mean that saltwater is now available at home, and then the large, heavy present. Sadly at this point the research failed them as, neatly wrapped under the tree, and delivered a couple of weeks before Christmas, was 5kg of live rock.

It explains the slightly odd smell that I've been trying to trace, and had put down to the Christmas stilton eventually, after upper the cleaning regime on the display as I'd convinced myself that it must be coming from the sump.

On the bright side, it's now a nice collection of base rock, and will get me started if I give it a clean and reseed with live rock.

At least dead rock isn't entirely useless but Live rock costs FAR MORE than dead rock. That's a shame :p

I had thought of that silver lining. There are some nice pieces in there as well.

They really did try so hard and it gave me an Awwe moment, while reminding me of a gift my husband once purchased for his mum. A live potted planted that he decided to hide in his wardrobe

, funny it never occured to him that plants need two things to survive those being water and light

At least with some  more live rock you should be able to sort of re-seed the now deceased live rock to some degree.

Well the family have finally returned to their various places of residence so I can start to get things moving on this tank. It'll be a slow process reseeding the dead rock, but I suspect that that'll be a good thing, but I should have some time tomorrow to start cleaning it down ready to get started.

As has been said, it'll give me a good choice of bits, and significantly reduce the cost of starting as I have more dead rock than I technically need in live, so have the luxury of choice. Particularly as this will end up an invert nano.

Stilton....
