not me but my tank of course and just when I thought I was getting ahead.

I first noticed my red platty which I just bought develop very small white wispy bits near its mouth, thought nothing of it but kept a close eye over the last day or two noticing a gradual slow down in its behaviour.

Today, has a largishwhite spot on its fin and my two black mollies and recently aquired betta all have small specs of whitespot.

Not happy and will post photos later today, have to dash out to work.

Tank stats are all fine and details below.

Any advice?

do the "spots" look like the size of a pin head. or are they more 3D and fluffy? if they are fluffy its cotton mouth, and by fluffy i mean does it look like a small coliflower (that what lots of people describe it as).
pictures would help alot as i could get a better look. hope they cocme out fine.
shang hi

They look like pin heads on most of the others but the red platty has what you could call cauliflower all over it and now has fin rot.

Photos to come.

fin rot is a pain in the as* go to your Local fish shop and ask for treatment, isolate all infected fish in hospital tank (if you dont have one a sealed bag with tank water floaing in the tank will do it, but get a hospital tank). treat all infected fish with melafix as it does white spot and fin rot, get medication for the cotton mouth (it will go all over the bodys soon) and treat them for what they have. treat the main tank instantly for white spot to just to be safe (increase the aireation with medication (u need a hospital tank now) so the fish wont choak. remove carbon from the filter otherwise medication is useless.
use this to help http://www.nationalfishpharm.com
keep a close eye on all fish, spend 10 mins cheaking every one if you have to (not 10 mins each, unless you want to) .
all of these deiseases are very curable if cought at the right time (i hope u got it). any fish with fin rot should be seperated from all others untill it has it fin fully developed again (it will get picked on).
post asmany pics as posable (use the best ones), get them from all directions and next to each pic say what to look at.

with my greatest hopes for your fish, shang hi :good:

Thanks Shanghi, much appreciated.

Here goes.

Just got back from the LFS and they have no whitespot treatment... I asked about melafix and they said this was not appropriate.. then I came home and read your post

I did get some water stress coat? I was told this may help relieve stress? until monday..

I had a look at my heater and I think I have dropped the temp by over 5 deg to the low 70s.. usually on 79-81f so I have a feeling this is what has caused this.

Heres some photos.

And some more..

Fin looks ravaged and there is a large white spot on the side looking like a fungal/bacterial infection which also covers the mouth.

Please tell me shes not pregnant?

White molly also has small white spots on its fin.

melafix is a good and usefull thing to have by you just incase, but the Betta looks like it has fin rot as i can see raged fins and i can see on a higher fin (i think its called dorsal fin) a small whte tip to the fin, look closley if this is the case then fin rot is a positive (white edging is a symptom of fin rot).

weee red had a chunk of its tail missing with white edging in the missing chunk (looks like its repairing though), i can't see any white spots on it though but i do see the cotton on it's side and bottom jaw.

now the bottom fish (platy or molly?) has a few white spots on her lower back and tail fin, sighns of bloating could be consterpation (most likley pregnant) give the fish some cooked de-shelled peas that are finley choped so the fish cant choak to treat consterpation if your fish ever get it. she looks like she has a gravid spot though, is this her normal colouration?

i now see on the betta the white spots, not many though, and they look like a case of whitespot. try another fish store (if you can) for melafix as it treats whitespot and fin rot.

remember to isolate the infected fish and treat the main tank with melafix to reduce chances of more whitespot and fin rot. increase water temp to 80-82 degrees F and increase aireation (add another air stone if you have too). remove the carbon filter though otherwise medication useless.

keep an eye on the molly because it looks like its had a beating, damaged skales and the missing chunk of tail

good luck with the treatment, nothing to serious yet because you caught it early (keep water quality high to reduce chances of secondary infection)

good luck again with the fishys shang hi

P.S. if i repeated any thing its because i types this post twice, i hat a wrong key and it all went

Cheers SH :good: top advice but sadly little red was floating on the bottom last night and has now moved on.

The betta has some damage to its scales now so I fear this is next..

Also, my Gourami is sitting on the bottom a lot more... watch this space. Off to the LFS to get some melafix.

WHat do I do with carbon filter once I remove it? and when can I put it back in?

Edit*

Just got back from LFS, bought some melafix, carbon filter removed so fingers crossed hey?

Also.. it reads on the bottle that I must add 3 teaspoons daily for 7 days and then carry out a 25% water change, is this correct?

Help!

My tank water is filthy!! and I cannot help but think that this is going to stress the fish out even more?

Can I do a water change? fish seem to be getting better, the betta has very few spots but has some marks on its head.. will post a photo later.

I also have another "headache" yellow platty has dropped a fry and looks ready to go any time soon.

I think my molly has this.. will try and capture a photo and I think the whole tank is screwed now to be honest...

What can I do?

Edit* looks like I have to let it run its course...

Can i carry out a water change though? just to keep on top of clean water?

To be honest hope not.
I know it is a mess.
Just got to hang in there, been here myself with ntd lost the lot.
Clear the whitespot up, can cause bacterial infections on top.
Only preform a water change if its urgent, add the correct amount of med back to the water removed.

Cheers Wilder, I am adding melafix daily as advised on the bottle for 7 days, is this correct?

Don't rate melafix o be honest only good on cuts and wounds.
What are you using the melafix for as it no good on bacterial finrot.

What country are you from have you got a whitespot med yet as it a fast killer.
Also finrot is common on top of whitespot.

UK, was told that melafix is a good all round fix? lfs didnt have any whitespot treatment...
